GMTK 2024 Game Jam
This is my first ever entry into an actual Game Jam. I've watched GMTK on youtube for years and since I've been working with godot for a couple months now felt it would be a good challenge to try. Especially since this game jam's time limit was 96 hours instead of just 48.
The theme this year was "Built to scale". I went through a few ideas and even started prototyping one of them that I had to scrap. The theme was rather difficult but I ultimately settled on this.
I couldn't get the idea of an Only Up/Getting Over It style game, but also knew those would be far too difficult for a game jam where people are trying to play literally thousands of games in a short period.
So this one is more reminiscent of The Stanley Parable in that the narrator will react to the player's choices, say pretentious comments, and a whole lot of weeb quotes. The game shouldn't be too difficult, but the physics can be wonky and there has been minimal play testing.
At the end it will tell you how long you took and some stats about your run, including how many "achievements" you unlocked (unique voice lines).
I no doubt could have spent a lot more time on this, but overall it's feature complete and I'm happy with it. It's a short timeframe to make a complete game with all the sound, music, UI, gameplay elements, content, writing, an ending, etc.
I don't think the concept I went for would extend to a longer experience, it doesn't have that novel of a climbing mechanic. Stacking bricks can only be so interesting or challenging.
One thing to note is if you do fall you will often be taken back up to the platform you fell from. It's an overall a forgiving game, more meant to be mildly humourous than challenging.
As usual I have also published the game on my github. So if you want to check out the source code or find the secret voice lines you missed go ahead and explore it there.
